Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Start from the Lorentz force on one charge moving with drift velocity.

Hint 2

Multiply by the number of carriers and replace nqAv_d by the current.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Let the conductor have length , cross-section and mobile carriers per unit volume, each of charge .

Total number of mobile carriers .

Force on one carrier moving with drift velocity is . So the total force is
    ...(1)

    ½ mark
  2. The current through the conductor is ...(2)

    ½ mark
  3. Define as a vector of magnitude along the direction of the current. From (1) and (2), , so

    ½ mark
  4. Zig-zag conductor: Yes, the result still holds.

Divide the conductor into small straight elements and add their forces vectorially: .

For a uniform this becomes , where is the vector joining the two ends of the conductor.

    ½ mark

Answer: ; yes, it is valid for a zig-zag conductor (sum over small straight elements )

Where the marks are

  • Writes the total number of carriers nAL and the force nALq(v_d × B) (½ mark)
  • Uses I = nqAv_d (½ mark)
  • Obtains F = I(L × B) (½ mark)
  • Says yes and justifies by treating the conductor as straight elements dl summed vectorially (½ mark)
