CBSE Class 12 Physics 2024: question 25

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2024, paper 55/5/1, section C, question 25, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q25 · 3 marks · Short answerMoving Charges and Magnetism

An electron moving with a velocity enters a region of uniform magnetic field . Find the radius of the circular path described by it. While rotating; does the electron trace a linear path too ? If so, calculate the linear distance covered by it during the period of one revolution.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Split the velocity into components perpendicular and parallel to B.

Hint 2

Only the perpendicular part causes circular motion; the parallel part carries the electron forward during one period T = 2πm/eB.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. is along . So the velocity component perpendicular to is m/s, and the component parallel to is m/s.

    Radius:

    ½ mark
  2. ½ mark
  3. Yes. The parallel component is unaffected by the field, so the electron also moves uniformly along . It therefore follows a helical path.

    ½ mark
  4. Linear distance covered in one revolution (the pitch):

    ½ mark
  5. ½ mark
  6. ½ mark

Answer: r ≈ 0.114 m; yes (helical path); linear distance per revolution ≈ 0.36 m

Where the marks are

  • Uses r = mv⊥/eB with v⊥ = 1.0 × 10⁷ m/s (½ mark)
  • Gets r ≈ 11.4 × 10⁻² m (½ mark)
  • States that it also moves linearly along B (helix) (½ mark)
  • Uses pitch = v∥ × 2πm/eB (½ mark)
  • Substitutes the values (½ mark)
  • Pitch ≈ 0.36 m (½ mark)
