CBSE Class 12 Physics 2024: question 24(b)
Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2024, paper 55/5/1, section C, question 24(b), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q24(b) · 3 marks · Short answerMoving Charges and Magnetism
Answer the following.
- (i)0 marks
State and explain Ampere's circuital law.
- (ii)0 marks
Two long straight parallel wires separated by 20 cm, carry 5 A and 10 A current respectively, in the same direction. Find the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at a point midway between them.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Find the field of each wire at 10 cm using μ₀I/2πr.
Hint 2
Between two wires carrying current in the same direction, do the two fields add or oppose?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

(i) Ampere's circuital law: The line integral of the magnetic field around any closed loop in vacuum equals times the net current threading the loop:
The integral is taken along the closed loop (Amperian loop) that bounds the surface. is the net current passing through that surface, with its sign given by the right-hand rule.
- ½ mark
(ii) Field of a long straight wire: . The midpoint is at m from each wire.
T (due to the 5 A wire)
- ½ mark
T (due to the 10 A wire)
- ½ mark
For currents in the same direction, the two fields at the midpoint are opposite to each other. So
T - ½ mark
The net field is T. It is perpendicular to the plane of the wires, in the direction of the field due to the 10 A wire (given by the right-hand rule for that wire).
Answer: (ii) B = 1 × 10⁻⁵ T, perpendicular to the plane of the wires, along the field of the 10 A wire
Where the marks are
- States and explains Ampere's circuital law ∮B·dl = μ₀I (1 mark)
- Field of the 5 A wire = 10⁻⁵ T (½ mark)
- Field of the 10 A wire = 2 × 10⁻⁵ T (½ mark)
- Net field = B₂ − B₁ = 10⁻⁵ T (½ mark)
- Direction along the field of the 10 A wire (½ mark)
