CBSE Class 12 Physics sample paper 2023-24: question 26

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2023-24, section C, question 26, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q26 · 3 marks · Short answerMoving Charges and Magnetism

The given figure shows a long straight wire of a circular cross-section (radius a) carrying steady current I. The current I is uniformly distributed across this cross-section. Calculate the magnetic field in the region r < a and r > a.

Figure in the paper: Long horizontal wire carrying current I to the right, with circular cross-section of radius a shown. Amperian loop 1 is a circle of radius r1 inside the wire (r<a); loop 2 is a larger circle of radius r outside the wire, with point P on it. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Use Ampere's circuital law with circular loops concentric with the wire.

Hint 2

Inside the wire, only the fraction of the current is enclosed.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Region r > a: Take a circular Amperian loop (loop 2) of radius r, concentric with the wire. By symmetry B is tangential and of the same magnitude everywhere on it, length . Whole current I is enclosed.
    Ampere's circuital law: , so .

    1½ marks
  2. Region r < a: Take loop 1 of radius r inside the wire. Current is uniform, so the enclosed current is .
    , so .

    1½ marks

Answer: : ; :

Where the marks are

  • Applies Ampere's law to outer loop to get (1½ marks)
  • Finds enclosed current and gets (1½ marks)
