Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

For I, first make aniline, then protect –NH₂ so that only one Br enters at the para position.

Hint 2

For II, the product has one more carbon than the starting compound, so which reagent adds a carbon and can be reduced to –CH₂NH₂?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. I. Nitrobenzene aniline acetanilide 4-bromoacetanilide 4-bromobenzenamine.

Acetylation lowers the activating power of –NH, so mainly the mono para-bromo product forms.

    1 mark
  2. II. (2-phenylethanamine).

    1 mark

Answer: I. PhNO₂ → (Sn/HCl) PhNH₂ → (Ac₂O) PhNHCOCH₃ → (Br₂) p-BrC₆H₄NHCOCH₃ → (hydrolysis) p-BrC₆H₄NH₂. II. PhCH₂Cl → (KCN) PhCH₂CN → (LiAlH₄) PhCH₂CH₂NH₂.

Where the marks are

  • Correct sequence: reduction, acetylation, bromination, hydrolysis (1 mark)
  • Cyanide substitution then reduction to 2-phenylethanamine (1 mark)
