Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Carbylamine is a test only primary amines answer to.

Hint 2

Which reagents turn RNH₂ into an isocyanide?

Hint 3

For Gabriel synthesis, start by making the potassium salt of phthalimide, then alkylate and hydrolyse.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Carbylamine reaction: A primary amine (aliphatic or aromatic) is heated with chloroform and ethanolic KOH. It forms an isocyanide (carbylamine), which has a very foul smell. Secondary and tertiary amines do not give this test.

    1 mark
  2. (b) Gabriel phthalimide synthesis:

    • Phthalimide is treated with ethanolic KOH to form potassium phthalimide.
    • Heating this salt with an alkyl halide gives N-alkylphthalimide.
    • Alkaline hydrolysis of N-alkylphthalimide gives a pure primary amine and sodium phthalate.

    1 mark

Answer: (a) RNH₂ + CHCl₃ + 3KOH → RNC (foul smell); (b) phthalimide → K-phthalimide → N-alkylphthalimide → RNH₂ (1° amine)

Where the marks are

  • Carbylamine reaction explained or equation forming foul-smelling isocyanide (1 mark)
  • Gabriel synthesis explained or equations giving a primary amine (1 mark)
