Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Format: sender's address (B/66, Mall Road, Guwahati) and date at the top; then 'The Editor, National Times, [city]'; subject line 'Subject: Curbing environmental pollution'; salutation 'Sir/Madam,'; closing 'Yours faithfully, Garima/Gopal, Volunteer, Greenpeace India'.

    1 mark
  2. Body, para 1 (concern): I write as a volunteer of Greenpeace India to express deep concern over the grave and irreparable damage that pollution is causing to society. In our megacities, rapid urbanization and rampant industrialization have placed unprecedented pressure on limited resources. Polluted air and water now harm the health and well-being of residents.

    1 mark
  3. Body, para 2 (solutions): Degradation can be curbed only through firm environmental laws and their strict enforcement. Industries must follow pollution-control norms, with heavy penalties for violators. Governments should promote renewable energy and offer incentives for eco-friendly practices. Awareness campaigns and environmental education in schools are also needed, and authorities must be held accountable. I request you to publish this letter so that citizens and policymakers act in time.

    1 mark
  4. Organisation and accuracy: ideas are in a logical order, in formal tone and paragraphs, with correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.
