Q4(b) · 5 marks · WritingCompetency-basedWriting Skills

You are Rahul / Rita, a student of DRK World School, Preet Vihar, Prem Nagar. You have recently noticed that the street in front of the school is being used as a thoroughfare by vehicles because of the construction work on the main street. This has led to a number of near fatal accidents involving school students who have become vulnerable to road injuries and exposure to toxic air and noise pollution while going to school. Write a letter to the Editor of a local daily in about 120 words highlighting the problem. You may also suggest possible solutions such as road safety signages, speed breakers, traffic timings.

Hint 2

Hint 3

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Format: sender's address, date, 'The Editor, [Newspaper], City', subject 'Danger to school students from traffic on Preet Vihar street', salutation 'Sir/Madam', close and signature.

    1 mark
  2. Body (model):

Through your newspaper I wish to draw attention to a serious problem near DRK World School, Preet Vihar. Because of construction on the main street, heavy traffic now uses our narrow school street. This has caused several near-fatal accidents, and students are vulnerable to road injuries. Vehicle fumes and constant honking also expose children to toxic air and noise pollution.

I suggest that the authorities put up road safety signboards, build speed breakers and place a traffic marshal at the gate. Heavy vehicles should be barred during school entry and exit hours.

I hope prompt action will keep our children safe.

    Yours faithfully
    Rahul
