Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Use the formal letter-to-the-editor format with a subject line.

Hint 2

Cover the problem, the danger it causes, then your solutions.

Hint 3

Close with a polite request for action.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Format: sender's address, date, receiver (The Editor, name of the daily, city), subject line 'Speeding vehicles on colony roads', salutation 'Sir/Madam', complimentary close 'Yours faithfully', and name.

    1 mark
  2. Body, concern and consequences: Through your newspaper I wish to draw the attention of the authorities to the rising speed of vehicles on our colony roads. Reckless driving has made the roads unsafe for children, the elderly and pedestrians, and has caused several accidents and injuries.

    2 marks
  3. Suggestions, with organisation: The authorities should install speed breakers and signboards, enforce speed limits strictly with fines and patrolling, and run awareness drives for drivers and residents. Ideas are in paragraphs in a formal tone.

    1 mark
  4. Accuracy: correct spelling, punctuation and grammar; about 120 words. I hope prompt action will be taken. Yours faithfully, Samyukta Khanna.
