CBSE Class 12 Physics sample paper 2023-24: question 28(b)

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2023-24, section C, question 28(b), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q28(b) · 3 marks · Short answerMoving Charges and Magnetism

Two long straight parallel current carrying conductors are kept 'a' distant apart in air. The direction of current in both the conductors is same. Find the magnitude of force per unit length and direction of the force between them. Hence define one ampere.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Each wire lies in the magnetic field of the other: use .

Hint 2

Force on a current in a field is ; use the right-hand rule for direction, then put both currents 1 A and a = 1 m.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Field of conductor 1 (current ) at conductor 2, distance a away:

    ½ mark
  2. Force on length of conductor 2: , so , directed towards conductor 1.

    ½ mark
  3. Similarly, the field of conductor 2 at conductor 1:

    ½ mark
  4. Force per unit length on conductor 1: , directed towards conductor 2. Equal and opposite forces; for currents in the same direction the force is attractive.

    ½ mark
  5. Putting A, m: N/m.
One ampere is that steady current which, flowing in each of two infinitely long, straight, parallel conductors placed 1 m apart in vacuum, makes each conductor experience a force of N per metre of its length.

    1 mark

Answer: , attractive; 1 A gives N/m at 1 m separation

Where the marks are

  • Field due to first conductor at second (½ mark)
  • Force per unit length on second conductor with direction (½ mark)
  • Field due to second conductor at first (½ mark)
  • Force on first conductor; forces attractive (½ mark)
  • Definition of one ampere using N/m (1 mark)
