CBSE Class 12 Physics 2023: question 32(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2023, paper 55/1/1, section D, question 32(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q32(a) · 5 marks · Long answerMoving Charges and Magnetism

(i) State Biot-Savart's law for the magnetic field due to a current carrying element. Use this law to obtain an expression for the magnetic field at the centre of a circular loop of radius 'a' and carrying a current 'I'. Draw the magnetic field lines for a current loop indicating the direction of magnetic field.
(ii) An electron is revolving around the nucleus in a circular orbit with a speed of m s. If the radius of the orbit is m, find the current constituted by the revolving electron in the orbit.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

For the centre of a loop, what is the angle between each element and the line to the centre?

Hint 2

All contributions point the same way, so just add magnitudes around the circumference .

Hint 3

For (ii), current = charge passing per unit time = / time period.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Biot–Savart law: the magnetic field at a point due to a current element is proportional to I, to the length dl and to (θ between and ), and inversely proportional to the square of the distance r: , .

    1 mark
  2. For a circular loop of radius a, every element is perpendicular to the radius joining it to the centre, so , and : , and all point in the same direction (perpendicular to the plane of the loop).

    ½ mark
  3. 1 mark
  4. , directed along the axis of the loop (given by the right-hand thumb rule).

    ½ mark
  5. Field lines (described): closed loops encircling the wire on each side; near the centre they become nearly straight and parallel to the axis, passing through the loop. For anticlockwise current (seen from the front) the field at centre points out of the loop towards the viewer; the loop behaves like a magnetic dipole with one face N and other S.

    ½ mark
  6. (ii) Current due to revolving electron:

    ½ mark
  7. A

    ½ mark
  8. A mA

    ½ mark

Answer: (i) along the axis; (ii) mA
