Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Name the test that gives a foul-smelling isocyanide.

Hint 2

Decide which option produces a primary amine.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. A foul-smelling product with and alcoholic KOH is an isocyanide (carbylamine test). Only primary amines give this test, so X must be a primary amine.

  2. Reduction of nitrobenzene gives aniline, which is a primary amine. The other options give an isocyanide (A), a nitrile (C) or an amide (D), none of which is a primary amine. So the answer is B.

    1 mark

Answer: Option (B)

Where the marks are

  • Recognises the carbylamine test and identifies aniline from reduction of nitrobenzene (1 mark)
