Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2025, paper 57/7/1, section C, question 27, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q27 · 3 marks · Short answerBiotechnology and its Applications

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Micropropagation is tissue culture used to produce many plants.
Hint 2
Think about the explant, sterility and the parts of the culture medium.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- ½ mark
(a) Advantage 1: a large number of plants can be produced in a very short time.
- ½ mark
Advantage 2: all the plants are genetically identical (somaclones) to the parent. Plants without seeds, or where sexual reproduction is not possible, can also be multiplied.
- ½ mark
(b) A small part of the plant, called the explant, is taken and grown in a test tube under sterile (aseptic) conditions.
- ½ mark
It is grown on a nutrient medium containing sucrose, inorganic salts, vitamins, amino acids and growth regulators such as auxins and cytokinins. The explant forms callus and then develops into many plantlets.
- ½ mark
(c) Food plants grown commercially by micropropagation: banana.
- ½ mark
Tomato (apple is also correct).
Answer: (a) Many plants in a short time; genetically identical plants. (b) An explant is grown on a sterile nutrient medium with sucrose, salts, vitamins, amino acids, auxins and cytokinins. (c) Banana, tomato (or apple).
Where the marks are
- Any two advantages (½ + ½ mark)
- Explant grown under sterile conditions (½ mark)
- Nutrient medium with sucrose, vitamins, salts and growth regulators (½ mark)
- Two food plants, e.g. banana, tomato, apple (½ + ½ mark)
