Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Look for the state that is best on all three indicators.

Hint 2

Quote the actual figures for K and compare them with H and B.

Hint 3

Ask what a low IMR and high literacy tell you about people's lives and about the state's future.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. State K is likely to have the better human development standard.

    1 mark
  2. Reason 1: K has a very low IMR of 6, against 28 for H and 27 for B. This shows good healthcare, nutrition and life expectancy.

    1 mark
  3. Reason 2: K has a high literacy rate of 94% and a secondary net attendance ratio of 94%, far above H (82%, 73%) and B (62%, 69%). This shows better education and social development.

    1 mark
  4. Importance of IMR: Fewer infant deaths mean healthier children and a stronger, more productive population.

    1 mark
  5. Importance of literacy and attendance: Education empowers people, improves awareness of health, jobs and civic duties, and raises incomes, so it leads to overall development.

    1 mark

Answer: State K, because of its low IMR (6) and high literacy (94%) and attendance (94%). These indicators matter because they reflect health and education, the basis of development.
