Q38A · 5 marks · Case-basedCompetency-basedDevelopment

While studying the table given below for their Social Science project, two classmates A and B, notice significant differences in the Literacy Rate and Infant Mortality Rate while comparing the development indicators of three states. Analyse how the development levels of these states differ and suggest the inferences A and B can draw. What areas should each state focus on to improve their overall development?

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Compare the three states one indicator at a time. Who is best and who is worst?

Hint 2

Look at literacy and IMR together. Do they move in the same direction?

Hint 3

For each state, find the indicator where it is weakest and suggest action there.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Analysis: K is the best on all three indicators: IMR 6, literacy 94%, attendance 94%. B is the weakest: literacy 62%, attendance 69%, and IMR 27. H is in between: literacy 82% and attendance 73%, but its IMR of 28 is the highest of the three.

    1 mark
  2. Inference 1: Higher literacy goes with better health. K has high literacy and very low IMR, while B has low literacy and a high IMR.

    1 mark
  3. Inference 2: K's long-term investment in education and health has paid off. The wide gaps among the three show uneven development across states, which depends on policies and resources.

    1 mark
  4. Focus for H and B: H should improve maternal and child healthcare and nutrition to cut IMR, and keep improving education. B should expand literacy and secondary schooling and also improve basic health facilities.

    1 mark
  5. Focus for K: K should maintain and strengthen its existing education and health systems and improve quality further.

    1 mark

Answer: K is the most developed, B the least, and H is in between with a high IMR. Higher literacy goes with lower IMR. H needs better health care, B needs both education and health, and K needs to sustain its progress.

Where the marks are
