Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Both reproduce by fission. The difference lies in how many daughter cells are formed.

Hint 2

The malaria parasite forms many cells at once. The kala-azar parasite divides into two along a fixed plane.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Plasmodium – multiple fission.

    ½ mark
  2. The nucleus divides many times and the single cell then splits into many daughter cells at the same time.

    ½ mark
  3. Leishmania – binary fission.

    ½ mark
  4. The single cell splits into two daughter cells in a definite plane (orientation) with respect to its whip-like flagellum at one end.

    ½ mark

Answer: Plasmodium: multiple fission (one cell gives many daughter cells at once); Leishmania: binary fission in a definite plane (one cell gives two).

Where the marks are

  • Names multiple fission for Plasmodium (½ mark)
  • Explains multiple fission (½ mark)
  • Names binary fission for Leishmania (½ mark)
  • Explains binary fission in a definite orientation (½ mark)
