Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 31/6/1, section B, question 22(a), for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q22(a) · 2 marks · Very short answerLife Processes

List two differences between the movement of leaves of a sensitive plant and the movement of a shoot towards light.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Ask yourself whether the plant actually grows in each case.

Hint 2

Compare the stimulus, the speed and whether the direction of the stimulus matters.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Difference 1 – growth: The folding of the leaves of the sensitive plant (touch-me-not) is not a growth movement. It happens when cells change shape by losing or gaining water. The bending of a shoot towards light is a growth movement: the cells on the shaded side grow faster.

    1 mark
  2. Difference 2 – stimulus and direction: In the sensitive plant the stimulus is touch. The movement is fast and reversible, and it does not depend on the direction of the stimulus. In the shoot the stimulus is light (phototropism). The movement is slow and irreversible, and it is directional, towards the light.

    1 mark

Answer: Sensitive plant: non-growth, fast, reversible, non-directional, stimulus touch. Shoot: growth movement, slow, irreversible, directional, stimulus light.

Where the marks are

  • Any one correct difference, e.g. not growth-related vs growth-related (1 mark)
  • Any second correct difference, e.g. fast vs slow, touch vs light, non-directional vs directional (1 mark)
