The fluid in the mouth is saliva. Which food component does it start to digest?

Hint 2

Think about what would happen to that food component without the enzyme.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The enzyme in saliva is salivary amylase (ptyalin).

    ½ mark
  2. It is produced by the salivary glands.

    ½ mark
  3. If this gland stops secreting the enzyme, starch will not be broken down into sugar (maltose) in the mouth, so the digestion of starch will not begin there.
