Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 31/6/1, section C, question 27, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q27 · 3 marks · Short answerLife Processes

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The left side of the heart handles oxygenated blood and the right side handles deoxygenated blood.

Hint 2

Trace each kind of blood: which chamber receives it first, and which chamber pumps it out?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Oxygen-rich blood from the lungs comes through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium.

    ½ mark
  2. The left atrium contracts and pushes the blood into the left ventricle.

    ½ mark
  3. The left ventricle contracts and pumps the oxygenated blood through the aorta to all parts of the body.

    ½ mark
  4. Deoxygenated blood from the body comes through the vena cava into the right atrium.

    ½ mark
  5. The right atrium contracts and sends the blood into the right ventricle.

    ½ mark
  6. The right ventricle contracts and pumps the blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs for oxygenation. Valves prevent backflow, so the two kinds of blood never mix (double circulation).

    ½ mark

Answer: Lungs → left atrium → left ventricle → body; body → right atrium → right ventricle → lungs.

Where the marks are

  • Oxygenated blood enters left atrium from lungs (½ mark)
  • Passes to left ventricle (½ mark)
  • Pumped to body by left ventricle (½ mark)
  • Deoxygenated blood enters right atrium (½ mark)
  • Passes to right ventricle (½ mark)
  • Pumped to lungs by right ventricle (½ mark)
