The pie chart shows global millet production by country for 2018. India is by far the largest producer with 36 percent, more than twice the share of Niger, the second at 14 percent. China follows at 7 percent, then Mali at 6 percent, and Nigeria and Sudan at 5 percent each. Burkina Faso and Ethiopia contribute 4 percent each, Chad 3 percent and Russia just 2 percent, while other countries together account for 14 percent. India's lead can be explained by its vast arable land, suitable semi-arid climate, government support for millets and a large domestic demand. The African producers rely on millets as staple crops in dry regions, while the low share of Russia reflects cooler conditions and a preference for other cereals. - 1 mark
