Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Start by saying what the chart shows.

Hint 2

Compare the largest segment with the others and give the figures.

Hint 3

Close with a conclusion or a suggestion.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Content: use all the data. The pie chart shows vehicles as the largest source of air pollution at 50%. Industries and waste burning contribute 20% each, and construction 10%. Vehicles alone cause as much as all the others combined.

    2 marks
  2. Organisation: one paragraph with an opening that states what the chart shows, then comparison of the figures, then a conclusion. Model: The pie chart shows the major causes of air pollution in Indian metropolitan cities. Vehicles are the biggest contributor at 50%, equal to all the other sources together. Industries and waste burning each account for 20%, while construction adds 10%. Clearly, traffic emissions are the main threat. Authorities should promote public transport, enforce emission norms, regulate industrial emissions, ban open burning and control construction dust.

    2 marks
  3. Accuracy: correct spelling, grammar and punctuation, in 100–120 words.

    1 mark
