Mandela's experience of apartheid made him more determined to fight it, and he urged us to rise above divisions of race and class. In Rich's poem, the trees, symbolising women, push against the confines of the house. Both texts therefore show discrimination being overcome.

Equality demands sacrifice. Mandela endured twenty-seven years in prison, and learned that freedom means breaking mental chains too. The trees continue to grow despite being cut back. Both show tenacity and perseverance in the face of adversity.
