Types of Outsourcing: BPO, KPO and LPO (ISC Class 12 Business Studies)

Updated 14 October 2026 · Fact-checked

The three types of outsourcing in the ISC syllabus are Business Process Outsourcing (routine processes such as call centres and payroll), Knowledge Process Outsourcing (expert, analytical work such as research and analytics) and Legal Process Outsourcing (legal work such as drafting and legal research). A basic understanding of each is required.

What Types of Outsourcing is about

Outsourcing ranges from simple, rule-based tasks to work that needs deep expertise. The ISC syllabus asks for a basic understanding of three types:

  • Business Process Outsourcing (BPO): contracting out routine, process-driven business functions such as customer-care call centres, data entry, billing and payroll.
  • Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO): contracting out knowledge-intensive work that needs specialised expertise and judgement, such as research, data analytics, financial and market analysis.
  • Business Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO): contracting out legal work, such as drafting contracts, legal research, document review and patent work, to law firms or legal service companies.

Think of a ladder: BPO follows set procedures; KPO adds expertise and analysis; LPO is a specialised form of knowledge work in the legal field. India became a major destination for all three because of its large English-speaking, educated workforce and lower costs. In case questions, identify the type from the kind of work being outsourced.

Weightage: CISCE publishes no unit or chapter weightage for ISC Business Studies: the 80-mark paper (Sections A, B and C) can draw on any part of the Class XII syllabus.Source: CISCE ISC Business Studies syllabus, examination year 2027

Key concepts

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)

BPO is the contracting of specific, routine business processes to an outside service provider. The work follows standard procedures and needs basic skills, good communication and training rather than deep expertise.

Types: front-office (customer-related) services such as call centres, technical help desks and telemarketing; back-office services such as data entry, billing, payroll, accounts payable and claims processing. BPO can be onshore (in the same country) or offshore (in another country).

Benefits to the outsourcer: lower operating cost; focus on core business; round-the-clock service across time zones; access to trained staff and technology; flexibility to scale.

Limitations: risk to data security; loss of direct customer contact; quality and communication problems; dependence on the vendor.

Worked example

Suppose an airline hires a firm in another city to answer passengers' booking queries by phone and chat. Identify the type of outsourcing. [1 mark]

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Routine customer-care process handled by an outside firm.

Answer: Business Process Outsourcing (BPO).

Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO)

KPO is the outsourcing of knowledge-related, information-based and analytical work that requires specialised knowledge, expertise and judgement. Staff are usually highly qualified (MBAs, chartered accountants, engineers, scientists, statisticians).

Examples: market research and business analytics; financial analysis and investment research; data science; research and development support; engineering design; medical and pharmaceutical research.

Benefits to the outsourcer: access to highly skilled professionals with specialised knowledge; lower cost than hiring such experts in-house; focus on core decisions; faster insights; some compliance and process risk can be shifted to the KPO.

Limitations: higher fees than BPO; risk to confidential knowledge; need for close coordination and quality checks; harder to find capable vendors.

Worked example

Suppose a mutual fund in London hires an Indian firm of analysts to study company accounts and recommend shares. Identify the type of outsourcing and give one reason a firm would outsource such work. [2 marks]

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Analytical, expertise-based work: Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO).
  2. Reason: it gains access to skilled analysts at lower cost than hiring them in London.

Answer: KPO; access to skilled professionals at lower cost.

Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO)

Business Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) is the practice of a law firm or company contracting out legal support work to an outside law firm or legal services company, often in another country.

Examples: drafting and reviewing contracts and agreements; legal research; document review for lawsuits; patent and trademark applications and searches; compliance checks; preparing legal summaries.

Benefits to the outsourcer: lower legal costs (legal professionals abroad cost less); access to specialist legal skills; quick turnaround through time-zone differences; in-house lawyers focus on court appearances and client advice.

Limitations: confidentiality of sensitive legal matters; differences in laws and legal systems between countries; quality control; regulatory restrictions on practising law.

Worked example

Suppose a US company has an Indian legal services firm review thousands of documents for a lawsuit and draft standard contracts. Identify the type of outsourcing and one risk. [2 marks]

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Legal support work done by an outside firm: Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO).
  2. Risk: leakage of confidential legal information.

Answer: LPO; confidentiality risk.

Movement up the value chain: Indian firms have moved from BPO to KPO and LPO as their skills grew, earning higher fees for higher-value work.

Worked example

Distinguish between BPO and KPO on the bases of nature of work and skills required. [2 marks]

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Nature of work: BPO handles routine, rule-based processes; KPO handles knowledge-intensive, analytical work.
  2. Skills: BPO needs basic skills and communication; KPO needs highly qualified specialists.

Answer: Routine vs analytical; basic vs specialised skills.

Why outsource critical (knowledge) functions?

Outsourcing is not only for routine work. Firms increasingly outsource critical, knowledge-based functions because:

  • Access to scarce expertise: specialists in analytics, research or law may not be available or affordable in-house.
  • Cost reduction: no need to recruit, train and retain expensive experts full time.
  • Focus on core competencies: management concentrates on strategy and customers.
  • Speed and scale: large vendor teams can deliver faster; time-zone differences allow round-the-clock work.
  • Risk sharing: some compliance and process risks move to the vendor under the contract.

The trade-off is a higher risk to confidential knowledge and the need for strong contracts, confidentiality clauses and monitoring.

Worked example

Give one reason why a pharmaceutical company might outsource clinical data analysis (a critical function) to a KPO. [1 mark]

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Specialist statisticians are scarce and costly in-house.

Answer: To gain access to highly skilled specialists at lower cost while focusing on drug development.

Where students lose marks in Types of Outsourcing

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.

  • Mistake: KPO called BPO

Treating any outsourced office work as BPO misses that analytical, expert work is KPO.

Do this: Ask: routine process (BPO) or expert analysis (KPO)?

    Usually costs: 1 mark.

  • Mistake: Wrong expansions

Writing "Knowledge Production Outsourcing" or "Legal Product Outsourcing" loses the expansion mark.

Do this: Process, Knowledge Process, Legal Process.

    Usually costs: 1 mark.

  • Mistake: One-point explanations

A two-mark "briefly explain" needs the meaning plus an example or feature; one line earns half.

Do this: Meaning + example (+ one feature).

    Usually costs: 1 mark.

  • Mistake: Benefits written from the wrong party's view

In a case asking for benefits to the outsourced (vendor), writing the outsourcer's savings is off target.

Do this: Check which party the question names before writing.

    Usually costs: 1-2 marks.

Types of Outsourcing: frequently asked questions

How much detail is needed?

A basic understanding, as the syllabus says: meaning, examples and the main differences.

Is LPO a type of KPO?

It is knowledge work in the legal field, so it shares KPO features, but the syllabus lists it separately.

Can BPO be done within the same country?

Yes. BPO can be onshore (same country) or offshore (another country).
