Online Means of Conducting Business: B2C, C2C, B2B, Intra B, B2G and G2B (ISC Class 12)
Updated 14 October 2026 · Fact-checked
Online business is classified by who deals with whom: Business to Consumer (B2C), Consumer to Consumer (C2C), Business to Business (B2B), Intra-Business (Intra B), Business to Government (B2G) and Government to Business (G2B). ISC Class 12 Business Studies asks for a basic understanding of each with a few examples.
What Online Means of Conducting Business is about
Online transactions differ by the parties involved. When you order a book from an online store, a business sells to a consumer; when you sell your old bicycle on a classifieds site, a consumer sells to a consumer; when a factory orders steel through a supplier's portal, one business deals with another.
The ISC syllabus asks for a basic understanding with a few examples of six online means: B2C, C2C, B2B, Intra B, B2G and G2B.
The trick is to read the first letter as the giver or initiator and the last letter as the receiver. Watch the government pair closely: in B2G the business acts towards the government (paying taxes, filing returns, selling to it); in G2B the government provides services or information to businesses (licences, registration, notifications). Intra B means within one business: write it in full as Intra-Business.
Weightage: CISCE publishes no unit or chapter weightage for ISC Business Studies: the 80-mark paper (Sections A, B and C) can draw on any part of the Class XII syllabus.Source: CISCE ISC Business Studies syllabus, examination year 2027
Key concepts
- B2C: Business to Consumer
B2C is online trade in which a business sells goods or services directly to final consumers through websites and apps.
Examples: online retail stores, food and grocery delivery apps, airline and railway ticket booking, online banking and insurance for customers, streaming subscriptions.
Features: many buyers, small individual orders; marketing and customer experience are key; payment by cards, UPI, wallets or cash on delivery; returns and customer support matter.
Benefits: convenience and choice for consumers; wider market and lower costs for businesses.
Worked example
Suppose you buy a pair of headphones from an electronics brand's own app and pay by UPI. Which online means of business is this? [1 mark]
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- A business sells directly to a final consumer online.
Answer: B2C (Business to Consumer).
- C2C: Consumer to Consumer
C2C is online trade in which consumers sell goods or services to other consumers, usually through a third-party platform that brings them together and may charge a fee or commission.
Examples: websites and apps for buying and selling used goods (furniture, phones, cars), online auctions, classified-ad portals, peer platforms for renting rooms.
Features: individuals act as sellers; prices are often negotiable; the platform provides listings, ratings and sometimes payment protection.
Risks: fraud, poor quality, lack of warranties.
Worked example
Suppose a student sells her old textbooks to another student through a classifieds app. Identify the online means. [1 mark]
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Both buyer and seller are consumers; the app only connects them.
Answer: C2C (Consumer to Consumer).
- B2B: Business to Business
B2B is online trade between businesses: manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and service firms buy from and sell to each other.
Examples: a car maker ordering components from suppliers through an online procurement system; a retailer buying stock from a wholesaler's portal; a company buying cloud services from an IT firm; online business marketplaces.
Features: large orders and values; long-term relationships; negotiated prices and credit terms; integrated systems (orders, invoices, inventory).
Benefits: lower procurement costs, faster ordering, better inventory management and supply-chain coordination.
Worked example
Suppose a bakery chain orders flour and packaging monthly through its supplier's online portal. Identify the online means. [1 mark]
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- One business buys from another business online.
Answer: B2B (Business to Business).
- Intra B: Intra-Business
Intra B (Intra-Business) refers to online transactions and communication within a single organisation, among its departments, branches and employees, usually over the intranet.
Examples: employees applying for leave and claiming expenses online; branches requesting stock from the central warehouse through the company system; HR posting internal vacancies and policies; departments sharing production and sales data.
Benefits: faster internal processes, less paperwork, better coordination, real-time information and control.
Note the expansion: Intra-Business (within the business), not "inter-business" (between businesses, which is B2B).
Worked example
Suppose a supermarket chain's stores order stock from its central warehouse, and its staff apply for leave, through the company's intranet. Name this online means of business in full and explain it. [2 marks]
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Intra B (Intra-Business) means online transactions and exchange of information within one organisation, among its departments, branches and employees, usually through the intranet.
- Example: a branch requests stock from the central warehouse, and staff apply for leave online.
Answer: Online dealings within one organisation, e.g. internal stock requests and leave applications.
- B2G and G2B
B2G (Business to Government): online transactions in which a business deals with or provides goods and services to the government.
- Filing income tax and GST returns and paying taxes online.
- Supplying goods and services to government departments through online procurement portals and e-tenders.
- Submitting statutory forms and reports online.
G2B (Government to Business): online services and information that the government provides to businesses.
- Online registration of companies and businesses; licences and permits.
- Notifications of new rules, policies and schemes; publishing tender invitations.
- Online clearances and approvals; information portals for exporters and start-ups.
A loan given by the government to a business is not what G2B means; G2B is about online government services and information for businesses.

Where students lose marks in Online Means of Conducting Business
The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.
Mistake: Wrong expansion of Intra B
CISCE examiners' comments, 2024: candidates could not expand "Intra B" correctly although they understood the concept.
Do this: Write "Intra-Business" in full.
Usually costs: ½-1 mark.
Mistake: G2B confused with B2G
CISCE examiners' comments, 2024: candidates confused G2B with B2G, and some said loans from the government to business are G2B.
Do this: G2B = government provides online services and information to business; B2G = business files, pays or supplies to government.
Usually costs: 1-2 marks.
Mistake: Intra B treated as B2B
"Intra" means within; dealings between different firms are B2B, not Intra B.
Do this: Intra B is inside one organisation.
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Mistake: No examples
The syllabus asks for a basic understanding "with a few examples"; answers without examples lose the application mark.
Do this: Add one concrete example for each model.
Usually costs: 1 mark.
