Business Process Outsourcing (BPO): ISC Class 12 Business Studies
Updated 18 October 2026 · Fact-checked
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is the contracting of specific, routine, procedure-driven business processes to an outside service provider. Examples are call centres, help desks, data entry, billing and payroll. It needs basic skills and good communication rather than deep expertise, and may be onshore or offshore. It cuts cost and gives round-the-clock service but carries data-security and dependence risks.
BPO handles routine, rule-based work: front office deals with customers, back office handles records, and it may be onshore or offshore.

Understand Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)
1. Meaning. BPO is the contracting of specific, routine business processes to an outside service provider. The work follows standard procedures and needs basic skills, good communication and training rather than deep expertise or judgement.
2. Two kinds of BPO
- Front-office (customer-related) services: call centres, technical help desks, telemarketing.
- Back-office services: data entry, billing, payroll, accounts payable, claims processing.
3. Onshore and offshore. Onshore BPO is done in the same country; offshore BPO is done in another country, often to use lower costs and time-zone differences.
4. Benefits to the outsourcer
- Lower operating cost.
- Focus on core business.
- Round-the-clock service across time zones.
- Access to trained staff and technology.
- Flexibility to scale up or down.
5. Limitations
- Risk to data security.
- Loss of direct customer contact.
- Quality and communication problems.
- Dependence on the vendor.
6. Identifying BPO in a case. Ask: is the work routine and rule-based, with set procedures and little judgement? If yes, it is BPO. If the work needs analysis and expertise it is KPO; if legal, LPO.
7. A cost illustration (imaginary). A company's in-house help desk of 20 agents at Rs 25,000 a month each costs 20 x 25,000 x 12 = Rs 60,00,000 a year. A BPO vendor charges Rs 3,60,000 a month, i.e. 3,60,000 x 12 = Rs 43,20,000 a year, a saving of Rs 16,80,000.

Q4 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level
A bank spends Rs 48,00,000 a year on in-house billing staff. A BPO firm quotes Rs 3,50,000 a month. Calculate the annual saving, and say whether the bank can ignore data-security concerns.
Hint
Annualise.
Answer
BPO cost = 3,50,000 x 12 = Rs 42,00,000. Saving = 48,00,000 - 42,00,000 = Rs 6,00,000. The bank cannot ignore data security, since customers' financial data is sensitive; it needs confidentiality clauses and audits.
