Updated 18 October 2026 · Fact-checked

B2C (Business to Consumer) is online trade in which a business sells directly to final consumers. C2C (Consumer to Consumer) is online trade between consumers, usually through a third-party platform. B2B (Business to Business) is online trade between businesses, usually in large orders with credit terms. Read the first letter as the seller or initiator and the last as the receiver.

Read the first letter as the giver and the last as the receiver; C2C usually needs a third-party platform in the middle.

Understand B2C, C2C and B2B Online Business

1. How to read the labels. The first letter shows who gives or initiates, the last who receives. B2C: a business gives, a consumer receives. C2C: a consumer to a consumer. B2B: a business to a business.

2. B2C (Business to Consumer). A business sells goods or services directly to final consumers through websites and apps.

  • *Examples*: online retail stores, food and grocery delivery apps, railway and airline ticket booking, online banking and insurance for customers, streaming subscriptions.
  • *Features*: many buyers with small individual orders; marketing and customer experience are key; payment by cards, UPI, wallets or cash on delivery; returns and support matter.
  • *Benefits*: convenience and choice for consumers; wider market and lower costs for businesses.

3. C2C (Consumer to Consumer). Consumers sell goods or services to other consumers, usually through a third-party platform that brings them together and may charge a fee or commission.

  • *Examples*: sites for buying and selling used goods, online auctions, classified-ad portals, peer platforms for renting rooms.
  • *Features*: individuals act as sellers; prices are often negotiable; the platform offers listings, ratings and sometimes payment protection.
  • *Risks*: fraud, poor quality and no warranty.

4. B2B (Business to Business). Manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and service firms buy from and sell to each other online.

  • *Examples*: a car maker ordering components through an online procurement system; a retailer buying stock from a wholesaler's portal; a company buying cloud services from an IT firm.
  • *Features*: large orders and values; long-term relationships; negotiated prices and credit terms; integrated systems for orders, invoices and inventory.
