CBSE Class 12 Physics 2026: question 18

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2026, paper 55/5/1, section B, question 18, for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q18 · 2 marks · Very short answerElectromagnetic Induction

A plane circular coil is rotated about its vertical diameter with a constant angular speed in a uniform horizontal magnetic field. Initially the plane of the coil is parallel to the magnetic field. Draw plots showing the variation of the following physical quantities as the function of , where t represents time elapsed :
(a) Magnetic flux linked with the coil, and
(b) emf induced in the coil.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

When the coil's plane is parallel to B, how much field passes through the coil?

Hint 2

Write φ in terms of the angle between the area vector and B, then use Faraday's law ε = −dφ/dt.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. At the plane of the coil is parallel to , so its normal is perpendicular to and the flux is zero. After time t the normal has turned through from this position, so the angle between normal and is :

  2. (a) Plot of vs : a sine curve starting at zero, rising to maximum at , zero at , minimum at , zero at .

    1 mark
  3. (b) .
Plot of vs : a (negative) cosine curve: at , zero at , at , zero at , at . The emf is maximum in magnitude when the flux is zero, and zero when the flux is maximum (90° phase difference).

    1 mark

Answer: φ = NBA sin ωt (sine curve from zero); ε = −NBAω cos ωt (cosine curve, maximum magnitude at ωt = 0)

Where the marks are

  • Correct sinusoidal plot of flux starting from zero at ωt = 0 (1 mark)
  • Correct plot of emf as (negative) cosine, maximum magnitude at ωt = 0, 90° out of phase with flux (1 mark)
