CBSE Class 12 Physics 2025: question 23(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2025, paper 55/7/1, section C, question 23(a), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q23(a) · 3 marks · Short answerMoving Charges and Magnetism

(i) Write Biot-Savart's law in vector form.
(ii) Two identical circular coils A and B, each of radius R, carrying currents I and I respectively, are placed concentrically in XY and YZ planes respectively. Find the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at their common centre.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The field at the centre of a circular coil is perpendicular to the plane of that coil.

Hint 2

The two fields are at right angles, so add them like perpendicular vectors and use tan θ for the direction.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Biot–Savart law: . Here is the current element and is the position vector of the field point from that element.

    1 mark
  2. (ii) Coil A lies in the XY plane, so its field at the centre is along the z-axis: . Coil B lies in the YZ plane, so its field is along the x-axis: .

    ½ mark
  3. The two fields are perpendicular, so .

    ½ mark
  4. Net field: .

    ½ mark
  5. Direction: . The net field lies in the XZ plane at to (the x-axis), i.e. to (the z-axis).

    ½ mark

Answer: B = μ₀I/R, in the XZ plane at 30° to the x-axis (field of coil B), i.e. 60° to the z-axis.

Where the marks are

  • Biot–Savart law in vector form (1 mark)
  • Fields of both coils with directions (½ mark)
  • Vector addition (½ mark)
  • Magnitude μ₀I/R (½ mark)
  • Direction 30° with B₂ / 60° with B₁ (½ mark)
