CBSE Class 12 Physics 2025: question 23(b)

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2025, paper 55/7/1, section C, question 23(b), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q23(b) · 3 marks · Short answerMoving Charges and Magnetism

(i) A rectangular loop of sides and b carries a current I clockwise. Write the magnetic moment of the loop and show its direction in a diagram.
(ii) The loop is placed in a uniform magnetic field and is free to rotate about an axis which is perpendicular to . Prove that the loop experiences no net force, but a torque .

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Curl the fingers of your right hand along the current; the thumb gives the direction of m.

Hint 2

Opposite arms carry opposite currents, so their forces are equal and opposite; check whether they act along the same line.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) , with magnitude . By the right-hand thumb rule, a clockwise current (as seen by the viewer) gives perpendicular to the plane of the loop, pointing into the page (away from the viewer). In the diagram, draw the rectangle with clockwise arrows and a ⊗ at its centre marking .

    1 mark
  2. (ii) Let the loop ABCD have arms AB and CD of length and arms BC and DA of length . The rotation axis is perpendicular to , and the normal to the loop makes angle with . The forces on BC and DA are equal, opposite and act along the same line (the axis), so they cancel.

    ½ mark
  3. Arms AB and CD are perpendicular to , so each experiences force . Because their currents are opposite, one force is into and the other out of the plane. The vector sum of all forces is zero, so the net force is zero.

    ½ mark
  4. The forces on AB and CD have different lines of action and form a couple. The perpendicular distance between them is , so .

    ½ mark
  5. . The torque turns towards , so in vector form .

    ½ mark

Answer: m = I l b, perpendicular to the loop (into the plane for a clockwise current); net force = 0; τ = IlbB sin θ, i.e. τ⃗ = m⃗ × B⃗.

Where the marks are

  • m = IA with correct direction shown (1 mark)
  • Forces on the two pairs of arms cancel, giving zero net force (1 mark)
  • Couple of forces with arm l sin θ (½ mark)
  • τ = mB sin θ, i.e. τ⃗ = m⃗ × B⃗ (½ mark)
