Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Find the field of one wire at the other, then use .
Hint 2
Put both currents equal to 1 A and separation 1 m.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Force per unit length between two long parallel wires carrying currents and separated by distance : (attractive for like currents, repulsive for unlike).
- 1 mark
Putting A, m: N/m. Hence one ampere is that steady current which, flowing in each of two very long, straight, parallel conductors placed 1 m apart in vacuum, produces a force of N per metre of length on each conductor.
Answer: ; 1 A gives N/m between wires 1 m apart in vacuum
Where the marks are
- Correct expression (1 mark)
- Correct definition of one ampere with N/m and 1 m separation in vacuum (1 mark)
