CBSE Class 12 Physics 2024: question 31(b)

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2024, paper 55/5/1, section E, question 31(b), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q31(b) · 5 marks · Case-basedCompetency-basedElectric Charges and Fields

Answer the following.

  1. (i)

A thin spherical shell of radius R has a uniform surface charge density . Using Gauss' law, deduce an expression for electric field (i) outside and (ii) inside the shell.

    0 marks
  2. (ii)

Two long straight thin wires AB and CD have linear charge densities C/m and C/m, respectively. They are kept parallel to each other at a distance 1 m. Find magnitude and direction of the net electric field at a point midway between them.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Choose a concentric spherical Gaussian surface and find the charge it encloses.

Hint 2

At the midpoint, the field of the positive wire points away from it and the field of the negative wire points towards it: do they add or subtract?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) **Outside ():** take a concentric spherical Gaussian surface of radius . By symmetry is radial and has the same magnitude everywhere on it.

    Flux through the surface: .

    ½ mark
  2. Charge enclosed: .

    ½ mark
  3. Gauss's law: , so .

    ½ mark
  4. ½ mark
  5. **Inside ():** take a Gaussian sphere of radius . Flux .

The charge enclosed is , since all the charge lies on the shell.

    ½ mark
  6. So , which gives everywhere inside the shell.

    ½ mark
  7. (ii) Field of a long charged wire: . The midpoint is at m from each wire.

    ½ mark
  8. Directions at the midpoint:

    • The field of AB (C/m) points away from AB, i.e. towards CD.
    • The field of CD (C/m) points towards CD.

Both are along the same direction, so they add:

    ½ mark
  9. ½ mark
  10. , directed towards CD (perpendicular to the wires).

    ½ mark

Answer: (i) E = σR²/(ε₀r²) outside (radial), E = 0 inside; (ii) 1.08 × 10⁶ N/C directed towards CD

Where the marks are

  • Flux E·4πr² through the Gaussian surface (½ mark)
  • Charge enclosed σ4πR² (½ mark)
  • Applies Gauss's law (½ mark)
  • E = σR²/ε₀r² (½ mark)
  • Inside: charge enclosed = 0 (½ mark)
  • E = 0 inside (½ mark)
  • Field of a line charge λ/2πε₀r (½ mark)
  • Fields add at the midpoint (½ mark)
  • Substitution (½ mark)
  • 1.08 × 10⁶ N/C towards CD (½ mark)
