CBSE Class 12 Physics 2026: question 22(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2026, paper 55/1/1, section C, question 22(a), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q22(a) · 3 marks · Short answerElectric Charges and Fields

(a) Using Gauss’s law, deduce an experession for electric field at a point due to a uniformly charged infinite plane thin sheet.
(b) Two large thin plane sheets, each having surface charge density , are held close and parallel to each other in air. What is the net electric field at a point (i) inside and (ii) outside, the sheets ?

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Use a Gaussian cylinder (pill box) that pierces the sheet.

Hint 2

For two sheets, add the fields from each sheet with their directions.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Take an infinite thin sheet with uniform surface charge density . By symmetry, is normal to the sheet, points away from it on both sides (for ), and has the same magnitude at equal distances. Choose as the Gaussian surface a cylinder of cross-section area whose axis is normal to the sheet and which extends equally on both sides.

    ½ mark
  2. Flux through the curved surface is zero because there. Flux through the two flat faces .

    ½ mark
  3. Charge enclosed . By Gauss's law, , directed normally away from the sheet, so .

    1 mark
  4. (b)(i) Between the sheets the two fields, each , are equal and opposite: .

    ½ mark
  5. (b)(ii) Outside the sheets the two fields point the same way: , directed away from the sheets.

    ½ mark

Answer: ; (i) zero inside; (ii) outside

Where the marks are

  • Chooses a suitable cylindrical Gaussian surface (½ mark)
  • Flux = 2EA, with zero flux through the curved surface (½ mark)
  • Applies Gauss's law to get E = σ/2ε₀ (1 mark)
  • Field inside = 0 (½ mark)
  • Field outside = σ/ε₀ (½ mark)
