Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Name the phenomenon in which a changing flux produces an emf.
Hint 2
Write the flux through a coil rotating at angle ωt to the field, then differentiate.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

Principle: An ac generator works on electromagnetic induction. Whenever the magnetic flux linked with a coil changes, an emf is induced in it.
- 1 mark
Working: A coil (armature) of turns and area is rotated mechanically with constant angular speed in a uniform magnetic field . As the coil rotates, the angle between its area vector and changes continuously, so the flux through it changes and an emf is induced. The emf is taken out through slip rings and carbon brushes to the external circuit.
- ½ mark
Expression: At time the angle is , so the flux through each turn is . By Faraday's law, .
- ½ mark
Therefore , where is the peak emf.
Answer: ε = NBAω sin ωt
Where the marks are
- Principle: electromagnetic induction (1 mark)
- Working: rotating coil changes flux, emf induced (1 mark)
- φ = BA cos ωt and ε = −N dφ/dt (½ mark)
