CBSE Class 12 Physics 2026: question 33(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2026, paper 55/1/1, section E, question 33(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q33(a) · 5 marks · Long answerElectromagnetic Induction

(a) State Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction.
(b) Derive an expression for the self-inductance of an air-filled long solenoid of length and cross-sectional area A having N turns.
(c) A conducting rod of length 50 cm, with one end pivoted, is rotated with angular speed of 60 rpm in a uniform magnetic field of 4.0 mT directed perpendicular to the plane of rotation of rod. Find the emf induced in the rod.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Self-inductance is the flux linkage per unit current, .

Hint 2

Find inside the solenoid first. For the rod, the emf comes from the area swept per second, , times .

Hint 3

Change rpm into rad/s before substituting: multiply by and divide by 60.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Faraday's law. The magnitude of the emf induced in a circuit equals the time rate of change of magnetic flux linked with it. Its direction is such that it opposes that change (Lenz's law).

    1 mark
  2. (b) Field and flux linkage. Let a current flow in the solenoid. The number of turns per unit length is .

For a long solenoid, the field inside is uniform:

The flux through each turn is . So the total flux linkage is:

    1 mark
  3. Self-inductance. Since :

    1 mark
  4. (c) Convert the data to SI units.

    • cm m
    • mT T
    • rpm rad s

For a rod rotating about one end, the emf is:

    1 mark
  5. Substitute.

    1 mark

Answer: (a) ; (b) ; (c) V

Where the marks are

  • Correct statement of Faraday's law with (1 mark)
  • Writes and the flux linkage (1 mark)
  • Obtains (1 mark)
  • Converts 60 rpm to rad/s and uses (1 mark)
  • Correct result mV (1 mark)
