- 1 mark
(I)(a) Income indicator: Gross National Income per capita (PPP US$). Health indicator: Maternal Mortality Rate (per 1 lakh births).
- 1½ marks
(I)(b) Maternal mortality is far higher in India than in China: 103 women die per 1 lakh births in India against 23 in China, showing China's much better maternal health care.
- 1½ marks
(I)(b) Access to basic drinking water is fairly good in both: China 97% and India 93%, showing considerable progress in basic amenities, with China slightly ahead. (Also: China's GNI per capita of 18,025 is more than 2.5 times India's 6,951.)
- 1 mark
(II) A Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a geographical region whose economic laws differ from the country's usual economic laws.
- 1 mark
(II) Significance: SEZs attract domestic and foreign investment, promote exports and trade, and foster industrial development and employment (as China used them to attract FDI after 1978).
Answer: (I)(a) GNI per capita (income) and maternal mortality rate (health). (I)(b) China is far ahead in maternal mortality (23 vs 103) and slightly ahead in water access (97% vs 93%). (II) SEZs are regions with separate economic laws that attract investment and promote trade.
