Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Who gained most from reforms?

Hint 2

What crisis hit India in 1991?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (I) Yes. Globalisation has positive results: it gives developing countries like India access to global capital, technology and markets.

    2 marks
  2. (I) It has negative results too: critics argue it mainly benefits developed countries and widens disparities; in India, the reforms of the 1990s mostly benefited high-income groups and some service sectors rather than agriculture and industry.

    2 marks
  3. (II) Reason 1: a high rate of inflation.

    1 mark
  4. (II) Reason 2: a huge balance of payments deficit (also fiscal deficit / foreign exchange crisis).

    1 mark

Answer: (I) Agree: access to capital and technology, but benefits concentrated in rich groups and services. (II) High inflation and a huge BoP deficit.
