CBSE Class 12 Chemistry sample paper 2025-26: question 25

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2025-26, section C, question 25, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q25 · 3 marks · Short answerThe d- and f-Block Elements

Which of the following elements will:
I. exhibit similar magnetic behaviour and why? Magnesium (Atomic No. 12), Chromium (Atomic No. 24), Iron (Atomic No. 26) and Molybdenum (Atomic No. 42).
II. form white salts and why? Zinc (Atomic No. 30), Scandium (Atomic No. 21), Nickel (Atomic No. 28) and Vanadium (Atomic No. 23)

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Write the electronic configurations and count unpaired electrons.

Hint 2

For colour, write the configuration of the common ion (Zn²⁺, Sc³⁺, Ni²⁺, V³⁺) and check for d–d transitions.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. I. Chromium and Molybdenum show similar magnetic behaviour.

    ½ mark
  2. Cr: [Ar]3d4s and Mo: [Kr]4d5s have similar configurations, each with 6 unpaired electrons. So both are strongly paramagnetic with similar magnetic moments. (Mg has no unpaired electrons; Fe [Ar]3d4s has 4.)

    1 mark
  3. II. Zinc and Scandium form white salts.

    ½ mark
  4. Zn is [Ar]3d (completely filled) and Sc is [Ar]3d (empty), so neither has unpaired d electrons. No d–d transition is possible, so their salts are white. Ni (3d) and V ions (e.g. V, 3d) have unpaired electrons, so their salts are coloured.

    1 mark

Answer: I. Cr and Mo (similar ns¹(n−1)d⁵ configuration, 6 unpaired electrons each). II. Zn and Sc (Zn²⁺ 3d¹⁰, Sc³⁺ 3d⁰: no unpaired electrons, no d–d transition).

Where the marks are

  • Identifies Cr and Mo (½ mark)
  • Reason: similar configuration with 6 unpaired electrons (1 mark)
  • Identifies Zn and Sc (½ mark)
  • Reason: Zn²⁺ d¹⁰ and Sc³⁺ d⁰ have no unpaired electrons, so no d–d transition (1 mark)
