CBSE Class 12 Chemistry 2023: question 24(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2023, paper 56/5/1, section B, question 24(a), for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q24(a) · 2 marks · Very short answerAmines

(i) Draw the zwitter ion structure for sulphanilic acid.
(ii) How can the activating effect of group in aniline be controlled ?

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Sulphanilic acid has both an acidic and a basic group on the same ring; let one react with the other.

Hint 2

To tame the –NH₂ group, convert it into an amide so its lone pair is shared with a carbonyl group.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Sulphanilic acid is p-aminobenzenesulphonic acid. The acidic protonates the basic , giving the zwitter ion:
(benzene ring with and para to each other).

    1 mark
  2. (ii) By acetylation of aniline with acetic anhydride (or acetyl chloride) in pyridine to form acetanilide, . The N lone pair is now also delocalised onto the C=O group, so the ring is less activated; after the desired substitution, hydrolysis regenerates the group.

    1 mark

Answer: (i) (para); (ii) protect –NH₂ by acetylation (acetanilide)

Where the marks are

  • Correct zwitter ion structure of sulphanilic acid (1 mark)
  • Acetylation of –NH₂ to reduce activating effect (1 mark)
