CBSE Class 12 Chemistry 2023: question 28

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2023, paper 56/5/1, section C, question 28, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q28 · 3 marks · Short answerAmines

(a) Illustrate Sandmeyer’s reaction with an equation.
(b) Explain, why is more basic than in aqueous solution.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Sandmeyer reaction uses cuprous halides with a diazonium salt.

Hint 2

In water, consider how well each protonated amine is stabilised by hydrogen bonding with water.

Hint 3

Count the N–H hydrogens available in each conjugate acid.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Sandmeyer reaction: the diazonium group is replaced by Cl, Br or CN using the corresponding cuprous salt:

    (similarly gives ; gives ).

    1 mark
  2. (b) In aqueous solution basicity depends on the +I effect of alkyl groups and on solvation (H-bonding) of the protonated amine with water. +I effect alone would make the tertiary amine strongest.

    1 mark
  3. has two N–H hydrogens to form H-bonds with water and is better hydrated (stabilised) than , which has only one N–H and is crowded by three methyl groups (steric hindrance to solvation). The combined effect makes more basic.

    1 mark

Answer: (a) C₆H₅N₂⁺Cl⁻ + Cu₂Cl₂/HCl → C₆H₅Cl + N₂; (b) greater solvation (H-bonding) of (CH₃)₂NH₂⁺ with +I effect makes (CH₃)₂NH more basic

Where the marks are

  • Correct Sandmeyer equation (1 mark)
  • Basicity in water depends on inductive and solvation effects (1 mark)
  • Better H-bonding/hydration of protonated secondary amine; steric hindrance in tertiary (1 mark)
