Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Best way, best movements, standard time: which is which?

Hint 2

One boss vs one plan.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. 1) Method study: Finds the one best way of doing a job, covering every activity from procurement of raw materials to delivery, to minimise cost and maximise quality and customer satisfaction (process charts, operations research).

    1½ marks
  2. Time study: Fixes the standard time for a well-defined job by taking several readings with time-measuring devices; used to decide the number of workers, frame incentive schemes and determine labour cost. (Also: motion study, which eliminates unnecessary movements.)

    1½ marks
  3. 2) Meaning: Unity of command: one subordinate gets orders from and is responsible to only one superior. Unity of direction: each group of activities with the same objective has one head and one plan.

    1 mark
  4. Aim: Unity of command prevents dual subordination; unity of direction prevents overlapping of activities.

    1 mark
  5. Implications: Unity of command affects an individual employee; unity of direction affects the entire organisation.

    1 mark

Answer: 1) e.g. method study and time study. 2) Unity of command vs unity of direction differ in meaning, aim and implications.

Where the marks are

  • 1) Two techniques: 1½ marks each
  • 2) Three differences: 1 mark each
