Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Each disease has a typical pattern of fever or an extra symptom.

Hint 2

Look for a sustained fever, a fever with breathing difficulty, and a fever that recurs periodically.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Typhoid: sustained high fever of about 39–40 °C, with weakness, stomach pain, constipation, headache and loss of appetite.

    1 mark
  2. Pneumonia: fever with chills and cough, and difficulty in breathing because the alveoli get filled with fluid. In severe cases the lips and fingernails turn grey to bluish.

    1 mark
  3. Malaria: high fever with chills that recurs every 3–4 days, when Plasmodium released from bursting RBCs releases the toxin haemozoin.

    1 mark

Answer: Typhoid: sustained fever of 39–40 °C with stomach pain and constipation; Pneumonia: breathing difficulty, chills and cough, bluish lips and nails; Malaria: chills and high fever recurring every 3–4 days.
