Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Amniocentesis examines cells from the fluid surrounding the foetus. What can be learnt from their chromosomes?

Hint 2

Which piece of information from the chromosomes can be misused socially?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Advantage: Amniocentesis tests the foetal cells present in the amniotic fluid. It can detect chromosomal abnormalities or genetic disorders in the foetus, such as Down's syndrome, haemophilia or sickle-cell anaemia, and helps assess the survivability of the foetus.

    1 mark
  2. Disadvantage: The same test reveals the sex of the foetus. It is misused for sex determination, which can lead to female foeticide. For this reason it is legally banned for that purpose.

    1 mark

Answer: Advantage: detects genetic or chromosomal disorders (e.g. Down's syndrome) in the foetus. Disadvantage: misused for foetal sex determination, leading to female foeticide.

Where the marks are

  • One correct advantage, e.g. detecting genetic disorders such as Down's syndrome (1 mark)
  • Disadvantage: misuse for sex determination leading to female foeticide (1 mark)
