Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Think of IVF followed by ET (embryo transfer).

Hint 2

Where does the fusion of gametes happen in this programme: inside the body or outside?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Step 1: Ova are collected from the wife or a female donor, and sperms from the husband or a male donor.

    ½ mark
  2. Step 2: The ova and sperms are induced to fuse and form a zygote under simulated conditions in the laboratory (in vitro fertilisation).

    ½ mark
  3. Step 3: The zygote or early embryo is transferred into the female's body (fallopian tube by ZIFT, or uterus by IUT) for further development.

    ½ mark
  4. It is called a test tube baby programme because fertilisation and early embryo formation take place outside the body, in the laboratory (in vitro).

    ½ mark

Answer: Collect gametes, fertilise in vitro to form zygote, transfer zygote/embryo into female; called test tube baby because fertilisation occurs in the laboratory (in vitro).

Where the marks are

  • Collection of ova and sperms from couple/donors (½ mark)
  • Fertilisation in laboratory under simulated conditions (½ mark)
  • Transfer of zygote/embryo into female body (½ mark)
  • Reason: initial process is in vitro, in the laboratory (½ mark)
