Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Read "from his share" and "of his share" carefully: they are different.

Hint 2

The new partner's share is the total sacrificed.

Hint 3

Use 16 as the common denominator.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The wording differs: String sacrificed 1/4 from his share (1/4 of the firm), while Kite sacrificed 1/6 of his share (1/6 × 3/8 = 1/16).

  2. String = 5/8 − 1/4 = 6/16; Kite = 3/8 − 1/16 = 5/16; Spinner = 1/4 + 1/16 = 5/16. New ratio 6 : 5 : 5. Option (A).

    1 mark

Answer: (A) 6:5:5

Where the marks are

  • String gives 1/4 of the firm, Kite 1/6 of his own share (1 mark)
