Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Think of human activities that strip vegetation.

Hint 2

What happens to cattle-grazed land in dry states?

Hint 3

What does too much irrigation do to soil?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Mining: after mining is over, sites are left open with deep scars and heaps of overburden. Deforestation due to mining also causes land degradation, as in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.

    1 mark
  2. Overgrazing: in states such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, overgrazing is a main cause of land degradation.

    1 mark
  3. Over-irrigation: in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, over-irrigation causes waterlogging, which raises soil salinity and alkalinity. Mineral processing, such as grinding limestone for cement, also releases dust which hinders water infiltration.

    1 mark

Answer: Mining, overgrazing and over-irrigation (waterlogging, salinity)

Where the marks are

  • Mining and deforestation (1 mark)
  • Overgrazing (1 mark)
  • Over-irrigation, salinity or mineral processing dust (1 mark)
