Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
More workers are present than the work needs, and removing some would not reduce output. Which kind of unemployment is this?
Hint 2
Ask why these workers have no other job in the village.
Hint 3
Think about what other work villages could offer, and what training would let people take it up.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Reason: This is disguised unemployment. More workers are on the farm than it needs, so some add nothing to output. It arises because agriculture has too much labour, there are few other jobs in villages, and population pressure and lack of skills keep people on the land.
- 1 mark
Way 1: Diversify rural activities by setting up small-scale industries, dairy, poultry and similar work, so surplus labour finds productive jobs.
- 1 mark
Way 2: Give skill training and education so that surplus workers can take non-farm jobs in towns and industries. Land consolidation and irrigation also help.
Answer: Disguised unemployment; remedies are rural non-farm jobs such as small industries, dairy and poultry, and skill development.
