Hints

Hint 1
Think of the word 'horizontal': organs placed side by side.
Hint 2
Vertical means levels, from the centre down to the states and local bodies.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Horizontal power sharing: power is shared among the organs of government at the same level, i.e. legislature, executive and judiciary. Each exercises different powers, so no organ has unlimited power (checks and balances).
- 1 mark
Vertical power sharing: power is shared among governments at different levels, i.e. the Union government and state/regional governments. The Constitution lays down their powers (federal division), and each level acts independently in its own sphere.
Answer: Horizontal sharing is among organs at the same level; vertical sharing is among governments at different levels.
Where the marks are
- Horizontal: among legislature, executive and judiciary at the same level (1 mark)
- Vertical: among Union and state governments at different levels (1 mark)
