CBSE Class 10 Science 2026: question 37

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2026, paper 31/2/1, section C, question 37, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q37 · 3 marks · Short answerElectricity

The values of current flowing in a given resistor for the corresponding values of potential difference applied across the ends of resistor are given below in the table :

(Amperes)0·40·81·21·62·0
(Volts)1·22·43·64·86·0

Plot a graph between and and calculate the resistance of that resistor.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Plot on the x-axis and on the y-axis; what shape do the points make?

Hint 2

The slope of a – graph gives resistance.

Hint 3

Choose two points far apart on the line and find .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Graph: Take current (A) on the x-axis and potential difference (V) on the y-axis with a suitable scale (e.g. 1 cm = 0.2 A, 1 cm = 0.6 V). Plot the points (0.4, 1.2), (0.8, 2.4), (1.2, 3.6), (1.6, 4.8), (2.0, 6.0). Joining them gives a straight line passing through the origin, which shows (Ohm's law).

  2. Resistance = slope of the – graph. Take points A(0.4 A, 1.2 V) and B(2.0 A, 6.0 V) on the line, with C at (2.0 A, 1.2 V):

    ½ mark
  3. ½ mark

Answer: Straight-line – graph through the origin;

Where the marks are

  • Correctly plotted straight-line – graph with labelled axes (2 marks)
  • Uses slope = with substitution (½ mark)
  • (½ mark)
