CBSE Class 10 Science sample paper 2026-27: question 39(A)
From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2026-27, section C, question 39(A), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q39(A) · 5 marks · Long answerThe Human Eye and the Colourful World
Attempt either option A or B. A. I. What is meant by accommodation of the human eye? II. What is the near point of a normal eye and what does it signify? III. Name which type of lens is used to correct the defect in which a person cannot see distant objects clearly. IV. Draw a diagram to show how the choice of your lens in (d) helps to see distant objects clearly?

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Think about how the ciliary muscles change the shape of the eye lens.
Hint 2
A myopic eye focuses distant objects in front of the retina. Do you need to make the rays converge more or less?
Hint 3
In the diagram, the corrective lens should make parallel rays seem to come from the far point of the myopic eye.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
I. Accommodation: The ability of the eye lens to change its focal length, through the ciliary muscles changing its curvature, so that both near and distant objects are focused sharply on the retina.
- 1 mark
II. Near point: The nearest point at which an object can be seen clearly without strain. For a normal adult eye it is about 25 cm. It signifies the least distance of distinct vision, the limit up to which the eye lens can increase its converging power (minimum focal length).
- 1 mark
III. A person who cannot see distant objects clearly has myopia (near-sightedness). It is corrected with a concave (diverging) lens of suitable power.
- 1 mark
IV. Diagram (correction of myopia): Draw the eye with its lens and retina, and place a concave lens in front of the eye. Draw parallel rays from a distant object (at infinity) falling on the concave lens. Show them diverging after the lens so that, traced back as dashed lines, they appear to come from the far point O of the myopic eye.
- 1 mark
Show the eye lens bending these diverging rays so that they meet exactly on the retina. Label: concave lens, eye lens, retina, far point O, object at infinity.
Answer: I. Ability of the eye lens to adjust its focal length; II. About 25 cm, the least distance of distinct vision; III. Concave (diverging) lens, for myopia; IV. Diagram: concave lens diverges parallel rays as if from the far point, so the image forms on the retina
Where the marks are
- Correct meaning of accommodation (1 mark)
- Near point ≈ 25 cm with its significance (1 mark)
- Concave (diverging) lens for myopia (1 mark)
- Diagram: concave lens diverging parallel rays as if from the far point (1 mark)
- Diagram: rays focused on the retina, with labels (1 mark)
