CBSE Class 10 Science 2026: question 35

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2026, paper 31/1/1, section C, question 35, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q35 · 3 marks · Short answerCompetency-basedThe Human Eye and the Colourful World

A person is unable to read a book placed closer than 1 meter from his eyes. Identify the defect of vision in his eyes. Draw the ray diagrams to show the defect of vision and its correction.

Figure in the paper: Student to draw two ray diagrams: (1) the defect (hypermetropia) with rays from a near object converging behind the retina; (2) its correction using a convex lens placed in front of the eye so rays converge on the retina. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Ask yourself: can he see near objects or far objects clearly?

Hint 2

Not seeing near objects clearly is far-sightedness. Think about where the image falls in such an eye, and which lens converges rays more.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The person cannot see nearby objects (closer than 1 m) clearly, so his near point has moved far away. This defect is hypermetropia (far-sightedness). It happens when the focal length of the eye lens is too long or the eyeball has become too small.

    1 mark
  2. Diagram 1 – Hypermetropic eye: Draw the eye with its lens. Mark the normal near point N (about 25 cm) and the defective near point N′ farther away. Rays from N enter the eye and meet behind the retina. Show arrows on all rays.

    1 mark
  3. Diagram 2 – Correction: Place a convex (converging) lens in front of the eye. Rays from N pass through the convex lens and then appear to come from N′, shown by dashed back-extensions. The eye lens then focuses them on the retina. Show arrows on all rays.

    1 mark

Answer: Hypermetropia (far-sightedness); it is corrected with a convex lens of suitable power. Two ray diagrams are drawn: defect and correction.

Where the marks are

  • Names the defect as hypermetropia/far-sightedness (1 mark)
  • Ray diagram of hypermetropic eye with image formed behind the retina (1 mark)
  • Ray diagram of correction with a convex lens bringing the image onto the retina (1 mark)
  • ½ mark is deducted if arrows showing the direction of light are missing
